On the afternoon of April 2, Yanbian University held a “Young Scientist” academic salon at the One-Stop Student Community Service Center. Wang Hongfu, Chair of the Science and Technology Association and Vice President of the university, attended and delivered a keynote speech.

Wang Hongfu outlined three requirements aligned with the university’s research work and the association’s development goals. First, anchor research in national needs and conduct mission-driven projects. Researchers must be guided by national and social priorities, set ambitious research goals, integrate their work with national strategies and regional characteristics, explore and innovate boldly, tackle real problems, and contribute their wisdom and strength to serving major national strategic needs, the comprehensive revitalization of Jilin and local economic and social development. Second, break through disciplinary barriers and carry out organised research. Teams should stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration, actively engage with other disciplinary groups, seek breakthroughs at emerging intersections, and jointly apply for major projects. Research must be practical and effective, avoiding formalism, with a focus on the quality and practical application of results to enhance the university’s overall research competitiveness. Third, carry forward the spirit of science and conduct research with warmth. Young scholars should maintain the right research orientation, uphold the scientist’s ethos, be prepared to “sit on the cold bench” patiently which means enduring long periods of obscurity, and teach by example with rigorous scholarship. They should spark undergraduates’ academic interests through guiding innovation competitions and involving them in research, and reinforce graduate students’ scholarly character and innovation abilities, jointly fostering a healthy and upright academic atmosphere characterized by truth-seeking and pragmatism.

The event was chaired by Cui Wenxue, Deputy Secretary-General of the Science and Technology Association. Professor Han Hongxian of the School of Science delivered a lecture titled “From Energy and Resource Catalysis to Catalytic Medicine—Frontier Scientific Research through Multidisciplinary Collaboration.” His talk covered interdisciplinary applications of catalytic technology, breakthroughs in medical catalysis, and pathways for industry-academia-research integration. Professor Han explained the purpose of establishing the Energy and Resource Catalysis Laboratory, its main research directions and content, the current progress of its construction, and its long-term plans. He expressed hope that, through collective effort, the university would achieve high-level development in chemistry, physics, biology, medicine and pharmacy, drive green low-carbon transformation in national and local energy and resource sectors, and make innovative contributions to public health.

Members of the Science and Technology Association and faculty and student representatives from related colleges attended the salon.
